The Story of the Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas in Toledo, Ohio 

In the heart of East Toledo, a new beacon of faith emerged in 2023, the Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas. This sacred place, now a home for Orthodox Christians in the area, was born from the unwavering devotion and vision of Nicolai Salgau, a man deeply rooted in his faith and heritage.

A Legacy of Faith and Conviction

Nicolai Salgau’s journey began in Romania, where he was raised in a large religious family with a remarkable legacy—his lineage includes over 400 Orthodox priests. Faith was not just a tradition in his family; it was a calling, a way of life that had been passed down through generations. When Nicolai immigrated to the United States in 1996, he carried this deep spiritual foundation with him. Over the years, he built a successful life in Toledo, founding Salgau Roofing in 1998, a company known for its dedication to quality and professionalism. But despite his professional success, his heart remained committed to something greater—his faith.

A Divine Calling in Toledo

For years, Nicolai observed that the Orthodox Christian community in East Toledo lacked a dedicated place of worship. He knew that faith flourishes in a sacred space, where believers can come together in prayer, tradition, and spiritual growth. When he came across a church building for sale on Nevada Street, he saw more than just a structure—he saw an opportunity to build something lasting, something meaningful. With strong convictions and a deep sense of duty, Nicolai purchased the church with the sole purpose of transforming it into an Orthodox place of worship. His decision was not random; it was a natural extension of his family's legacy and his unwavering belief that faith should always have a home.

A Community Reborn

On March 15, 2023, the first Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in the newly established Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas. The hope is that the church to become a vibrant center of worship, drawing families, individuals, and seekers from all walks of life, under the guidance of Father Michael Shaheen. The church’s mission is clear: to provide a place where Orthodox Christians can worship, learn, and pass down their faith to future generations.

The Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas is more than just a building—it is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and the generosity of one man who answered a divine calling. Thanks to Nicolai Salgau’s dedication, the Orthodox community in Toledo now has a place to gather, to pray, and to strengthen their spiritual lives. As the church continues to grow, its doors remain open to all who seek a deeper connection with God. With the spirit of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of generosity and protection, guiding its mission, this church stands as a reminder that faith, when nurtured, can transform lives and communities.
